New sponsor children: Mary Ann

Mary Anne - Sparrow Foundation

In the Philippines the new school year has begun and we are happy to be able to bring all last year’s sponsor children to school again. A couple of students often skipped school and after several warnings we decided to stop their sponsoring. Because of this we were able to admit some new students in the Scholarship Program in their place. In the next few days we would like to introduce these new students to you in a news article.

Mary Ann

The third student we want to introduce is Mary Anne. She is 16 years old and has started the Accountancy education in college with a Sparrow Scholarship. Due to family circumstances at the beginning of this year her family did not have any income anymore. Mary Ann then started a little company with her family besides her education of which they just can get by. In the company Mary Ann is responsible for all finances.

Marjorie's Letter of thanks - Sparrow Foundation

Dear Sparrow Foundation,

Thanks a lot for Sparrow Foundation, because if Sparrow Foundation did not exist, a lot of children would not be able to go to school, since it is difficult to provide in basic needs already. We are very grateful to Sparrow Foundation, since it gives me the opportunity to go to school.

Thanks to Sparrow Foundation I am in the second year of High School now. If Sparrow Foundation did not exist I would not have been in the second year of High School because of the costs. My mother would not be able to give me this opportunity.

This is the reason why I want to thank Sparrow Foundation and especially God, because we can not pay for it and I am one of Sparrow’s sponsor students.

Again I thank Sparrow Foundation and God.

Claire

The second student we would like to introduce is Claire. She is Dennis’ younger sister. Claire’s big dream is to work in a service job in the shipping sector, like a sort of stewardess on a ship. For this job you can do a one year education at a shipping school. Claire really enjoys this study. The photo’s below show Claire during the basic safety training she attended for her study in Manila.

John Ralph

The first student we would like to introduce is John Ralph. Actually for Sparrow he is not a new student since he entered the Scholarship Program last year already. But since he has not been introduced, this has gone unnoticed. John Ralph started last year with the college study Architecture. His family is poor, but despite the poverty his parents managed to pay his secondary school education. John Ralph really wanted to go to college, but even if his parents would save 100% of their income for his education, this amount of money would still be less than a quarter of the total costs. So a college study was unreachable for him.

John Ralph did not give up and came to Sparrow’s office together with his sister. His certificate and his way of speaking showed he is an extraordinary student. If his marks could be converted and compared to the Dutch mark system he would have only nines and tens. This was one of the reasons we decided to admit him to our Scholarship Program.

During the first year John Ralph immediately showed he has a great talent. He already won an architecture award with one of his school projects. John Ralph is really grateful for this opportunity to study. He regularly drops by at Sparrow’s office to tell about school and to help out, for example by washing the car.

We pray that John Ralph will become an excellent architect and that he will be able to get himself and his family out of poverty in this way.

Scholarship Program 2012

Scholarship Program 2012 | Sparrow Foundation

On June 4th the Philippine school year starts again. We do not have fixed sponsors for each student yet, but we trust that we can arrange this for each student during the year.

It is wonderful to be able to send children to school who would not have this opportunity without sponsoring. And it was amazing to see the first fruit this year because after four years of sponsoring Joy finished her college study successfully!

Last week we went shopping with all our students to buy the necessary school supplies. Since shopping is something most students do not often do, this is always a big event to them.

Especially the girls really enjoyed trying on several shoes and the boys paid a lot of attention to finding a nice school bag.

This month our first college student has graduated. Joy was Sparrow’s first student in the Scholarship Program. She got a Sparrow sponsorship for her complete study Political Science. She finished her study successfully through hard work, which made us really proud. We pray she will find a good job and that her study will be the start of a way out of poverty. We also thank those people who support Sparrow’s Scholarship Program. Your support means a big difference for the people in Lazareto!

Medals

Medals

MedalsIn the Philippines the summer holidays started in April. At the end of the school year it is a tradition in the Philippines to hand out medals to the most successful students.

Sparrow is proud to let you know that seven of her sponsor children have  received a medal. For example Sheila (see picture) and Jocelyn, who both received a medal and also won a prize in the English school competition. Can you imagine these children would not have had the possibility to go to school without Sparrow’s sponsoring?

Sparrow aims to send every child, who has been sponsored last year, to school again next school year.
