Glyn Xyra’s parents brought her to our office. Sitting in the tricycle she was crying because of abdominal pain and severe diarrhea. The pediatrician prescribed several medications and Glyn Xyra recovered in a few days.
The abdominal pain and the diarrhea are probably caused by drinking polluted water. Most people in Lazareto pump water from underground and drink it. Lazareto is situated by the sea and the ground consists mainly of sand. For this reason waste water and faeces sink quickly to the ground water, which the people pump to the surface a little later to drink. We have already treated several children and babies with the same complaints and regularly untreated babies die because of drinking this polluted water. We hope we will be able to start a project on clean drinking water in Lazareto in the future.
